This Week in A2

Dear Families,

A few reminders:

1.  We would appreciate donations of baby wipes for the classroom.  We use these daily to keep our hands clean.  Thank you!

2. There is no school next week.  Happy Thanksgiving!

3. Report Cards are based on end of the year kindergarten standards.  At this time of the year, you should not expect to see a lot of 3's (meeting standard).  Students are working towards end of kindergarten standards.  Also, in your report card envelope (going home on Friday), you will find a list of the 1st 50 high frequency words and a list of fun spelling activities.  Kindergartners are expected to be able to read, write, and spell the top 30 words, but some students want the extra challenge!  :)

Math Centers

Thank you so much to the person who generously purchased the sterilite plastic containers for our math centers! (Amazon did not tell me who you were, but thank you!!!)  I'm so excited!!! Today the kids learned and played a new math game which they will be able play with partners during math centers. Each partner gets 10 unifix cubes in a specific color and a die. Each player rolls his or her die and writes his or her number into the partner equation "___ and ____ make _____." Each parter then counts out their number of unifix cubes and puts them in the middle. The partners then count how many unifix cubes altogether and write the total in the equation. They did a great job today and had so much fun! Can't wait to play with them again on Thursday!

What We're Learning
  • Math: A fun game that we have been practicing at school is "War" with a deck of cards (face cards removed).  Play this at home to help your child practice number ID, and concepts such as: more than, less than, equal to.  We continue to practice ID 2D & 3D shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, hexagon, sphere, cylinder, cube, cone), ID colors, days of the week,  patterns, days in school/beginning place value. We are practicing sorting by color, shape, and size, counting 0-5 objects, writing numbers 0-5, counting to 30, counting by 10's, counting by 5's.
  • Language Arts:  Letter/Sound of the week Mm.
    • Sight Words: Your child should be able to read, write, and spell the following sight words that we have studied over the past few weeks: a, the, I, see, my, go, to, like, can, look, you. This week's sight word is 'went'. Please practice reading and spelling these sight words at home as well as writing them in sentences!  Make flashcards, play a memory card game, do practice spelling tests, do back tracing, etc.
    • Writers Workshop: This week we will start our unit on writing Pattern Books.  We are also working hard on sounding out words phonetically in our stories.  Please do not tell your child how to correctly spell the word.  Instead, encourage them to "say it like a snail, stretch it like a snake, write down the sounds you hear."  Your child may want to practice writing stories at home too...attach them to your homework for extra credit!  Writing is meant to be a fun activity so keep it positive
