First Day of School

What does my child need to bring?

  • large child-size BACKPACK labeled with your child's first and last name (not a mini-backpack- it needs to fit a standard size folder).
  • A SWEATER or JACKET (labeled with your child's name).  Use a Sharpie to write your child's name on the tag or use personalized labels
  • A list of suggested supplies was provided by your child's teacher/school.  Please have your child bring the supplies to the Teacher Meet & Greet.  Please do not put your child's name on the supplies (except earphones).  They will be shared among the students.  Additionally, if you can donate other items to the class, please visit our classroom wishlist.

What time should we arrive?  Where should we go?

  • You can arrive at school any time between 8:00 and 8:20am.  You and your child may wait in the Kindergarten play yard out in front of the school.  Children may not be left unattended.
  • We will open the door at 8:20 a.m. Parents are welcome to come in and read with their child at his/her table seat from the books at his/her table.  Attendance is taken during this time. At 8:30, the teacher will ring the chimes.  At this time, children are asked to say a quick goodbye to their parents and come to the rug so we can start our day.
  • At 8:30, Kindergarten parents are asked to attend a meeting with the Principal, Ms. Lobao.  Location to be announced.

When and where do I pick my child up?
  • Dismissal is promptly at 12:00pm.
  • Please pick your child up at the outside door to the Kindergarten play yard.  If it is raining, you may pick your child up at the inside door to the hallway.
  • If your child is going to Vallemar Day Care, he/she will be picked up at the door by a day care provider.
  • If you are late, you must notify the office by calling: 650-738-6655.  Your child will be escorted to the office and will wait for you there until you arrive.

How can I prepare my child for a great first day?
  1. Create a Launch Pad.  Find a corner in your house for your child's shoes and backpack. You may want to laminate a favorite drawing and place it on the floor for a fun and reassuring jumping-off point.
  2. Build Confidence with Books. Read stories about school or other new adventures. Referring to a favorite character's bravery may help your child pinpoint anxieties and summon his own courage in an unfamiliar situation.  Some great books are: The Night Before Kindergarten by Natasha Wing and The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn.
  3. Envision the Future with a Customized Calendar. Whether you print out the calendar on our class website, or you buy your own, personalize it by adding with holidays, birthdays, and other events. Tell your child that as the year progresses, together you can document school plays, assemblies, field trips, and his/her many accomplishments. Show your child that a school year that can, and will, contain lost of exciting activities.
  4. Draw a Home-to-school Map. Create a poster of the route to school, complete with photos and illustrations of landmarks. This deepens your child's understanding of the connection between home and school, and will bolster his confidence as he learns to alternate between the two.
  5. Watch the Countdown to Kindergarten Slideshow. CLICK HERE to become familiar with the classroom and the teachers.
