Volunteering

Vallemar parents are known for being active, involved, and committed parents.  Although many parents volunteer above and beyond, all parents are encouraged to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours a year in some capacity.  In addition to volunteer opportunities with your child's class, parents are invited to help with the many volunteer activities coordinated by the PTO.
  • Field Trip Drivers- We will be going on various field trips throughout the year.  We will send out notices of dates asking for parent drivers in advance.  Siblings are NOT allowed on field trips.  Parents must have current forms on file in the classroom in order to drive.  Please see Mrs. Glasgo for forms if you plan on driving on a field trip this year.
  • Craft Day Volunteers- Throughout the year, we will need parent help with Kindergarten Craft Mornings!  This is a fun way to volunteer in the classroom with the kids.  We will post sign-ups in advance.
  • Vallemar Auction Class Project Coordinator- Every year, each kindergarten class is asked to create an item to be auctioned off at the annual school auction.  Previous items include class quilts made by the kids, framed classroom art, potted plant with ceramic pot decorated by the kids, ceramic platters decorated by the kids, toy chest painted by the kids, wooden rocking chair decorated by the kids, etc.  The class project coordinator is asked to come up with an idea for a class project, provide supplies (or solicit money from class parents to pay for supplies- if needed), and schedule parent volunteers (if needed) to take kids out into the hallway to work on project.  Coordinator should communicate with teacher as needed to schedule a time for students to work on project.

Helpful Tips for Classroom Volunteers

Volunteer for something you already find fun or interesting.  If you can't stand messes, stay away from craft days; maybe you will enjoy organizing book bags & homework folders.

  • If you can't make it, call the office AND email the teacher right away (and try to find a substitute yourself).  School: 650-738-6655, Email Mrs. Glasgo & Mrs. Vazquez.
  • Don't be late.  Please show up in the classroom when scheduled.  We are counting on you!  :) Be sure you leave plenty of time for parking and to pick up a visitor's pass in the office.
  • Please leave your cell phone on silent.  We don't want phones ringing during class time.
  • Help ALL kids.  Remember to be inclusive and support all kids in the classroom, not just your own son or daughter or the kids you know.
  • BURP: Be Understanding, Responsible, and Positive!  A bright smile and heaping dose of praise goes a long way in the classroom.  Refer discipline issues to the teacher and reinforce classroom behavior expectations.
  • Respect Student Privacy.  Special needs, grades, and performance are private and must be confidential.  You wouldn't want another parent talking about your child.
  • Have fun!  Enjoy this special time with your children!  You are appreciated!
